Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England. It is located on the River Aire and is the urban core of the City of Leeds metropolitan district. It is the fourth most populous city in England. According to the 2001 UK census, the Leeds Urban Area had a population of 443,247. The City of Leeds metropolitan district has a population of 750,200 (mid-2006 estimate). Leeds is one of England's core cities.

Leeds is recognised as the regional capital of Yorkshire and the Humber, an area with a population of around five million – similar to that of Scotland or Denmark. Over two-thirds of the Leeds district is covered with green belt land and the city centre is less than 20 miles from the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
